POESÍA DE PINCELES Y LIENZOS

Syed Mahmud

¿Te has olvidado de tu próximo cumpleaños?

¿Qué gran idea, ¿has dibujado algo?

¡Qué iba a hacer!

¿Cuándo te has ido?

¿No viniste aquí anoche? ¿Cuándo te fuiste? volvió a preguntar.

POETRY OF PAINTS BRUSHES AND CANVAS

Sculptures of the goddess of love Aphrodite were appearing one after another in front of Ranjan’s eyes as he opened the window of his room on the third floor and looked outside. The alley in Paribagh*1 where Ranjan lived was a bit lonely. He saw a few rickshaws*2 and pedestrians outside his building. The top of the Krishnacura*3 tree planted just in front had almost reached the window. This particular evening, he was trying to think of something beautiful to paint by gazing at the tree. There were no flowers then, as the last of them had fallen a few days earlier. In Ranjan’s mind, Aphrodite’s nude sculptures were standing one after another at the very top of the tree. Witnessing the beauty of the goddess, Ranjan thought to himself, how can people be rapists?!

Ranjan couldn’t shift from his mind the news of yesterday’s tragic rape in his neighborhood. The perpetrator killed the girl. How were people so ruthless! Ranjan was not able to relax at all, and he could not bring himself to engage in customary gossiping with friends that evening. He had instead just walked from Shahbag*4 to have a cup of tea and had been at the window ever since. He seemed to be a rapist himself. It was very difficult for him to stand in front of Madhurima, and he had been keeping himself hidden from the other girls. Is there nothing we can do? – Ranjan was asking himself. There were some protests, but what was the actual remedy to the issue. This egregious act was happening arbitrarily and commonly, and how many rapists were being punished! Could the problem really even be resolved only with punishment! A change of societal perspective was necessary, but this was not happening. Of course protest was needed at this moment. Everyone had to be convinced to change their perspectives about the issue. Ranjan thought, as an artist his brush could be the protestor, the place of his protest could be the canvas, He started drawing and wanted to do something to stop the inner conflict of his mind. But what would he draw?

He thought, perhaps, that the depiction of a series of raped women’s suffering image could be his subject. But Aphrodite shuffled his thoughts in a different direction. He was suddenly struck by inspiration– beauty! That was what the goddess was telling him! The illuminated beauty on the canvas could reprimand the distorted brains! Maybe so, but the presentation has to as though the portrait was alive, so that it can go to the neurons of the brain and injure the rapist mind. Ranjan became active on the canvas with his brush – he wanted to draw an awakening of love against atrocities. At last he started to feel a little relieved. The canvas gradually came to life. He drew eyes, a face, a nose, two lips, and a neck, then a nude woman came out along with her full body exploding beauty. It felt like a strong rebuke against a human-demon. Ranjan became surprised to see that the picture looked like Madhurima’s portrait. The shape of the face was as posh and clear as her, the standing posture was sweet like her, the waves of beauty were descending through the wavy body. However, the expression on her face was not exactly what Ranjan wanted.

Ranjan was trying to draw the expression as he pictured it in his mind, but he was not satisfied. The anguish of not being able to complete the painting as per his thoughts hurt Ranjan and he started feeling a small pain in his chest. After sitting in silence for a while, suddenly a sweet voice rang in his ears, «Hi Ranjan, what were you doing?»

Ranjan lived alone in a room in a three-room flat bachelor mess. He didn’t like sharing a room with anyone else. If the main door was closed, there was no need to close the door of his room. Everyone in the other two rooms knew Madhurima. So, Ranjan was not surprised by her sudden arrival, but he was amazed that the hour was a bit late. So he expressed it,” You! In this midnight!”

“What else day or night for me! Did you forget about your upcoming birthday?  I came to spend the night with you, now tell me what you were doing, why did you hold the brush, were you drawing something?” said Madhurima.

“Yes, I was drawing, I want to draw a complete series of art against the rape,” Ranjan said.

Madhurima became curious. “Like what?”

“I want to focus on beauty, not hardship. Beauty will mock the scoundrels, it will explain that love is the best, not bestiality,” replied Ranjan

Madhurima was surprised “What a great idea, did you draw anything?”

“I have started, but couldn’t finish the first one as per my thoughts.” Ranjan replied.

Madhurima sat down beside Ranjan and started saying, «I understand that you are very upset about yesterday’s incident. Listen, I know you are very sensitive, this is undignified not only for you but also for all of us, please don’t make it your own issue. It’s a disease of our society and we’re just a small part of this society.”

“So what, shouldn’t we do anything from our own position?” Ranjan said being little bit disappointed.

“Of course, we will do something, we’ve already started, you are doing also. But being a male this is not expected that you think of yourself as like the rapist and feel inferior to me or to the entire female society and suffer from self-loathing.” Said Madhurima.

“What could I do! I have been feeling unstable since yesterday. So I chose to draw, but cannot finish!” Ranjan said.

Madhurima stood in front of the canvas and said let me see what you draw! She saw and turned around to Ranjan with widening eyes, «Splendid! What a resounding art! You were able to draw like this without making me a model!”

Ranjan was bowing in shame, Madhurima came forward and pressed his face to her chest. Ranjan kissed her passionately on the cleavage and slowly lowered his face to Madhurima’s uncovered navel. Then Madhurima put her both hands behind Ranjan’s head and held it on her belly tightly. Ranjan closed his eyes silently like a man hypnotized.

There were a few knocks on the door. Ranjan slowly opened his eyes. The dazzling sunlight penetrated through the window and his eyes were gently irritated. Someone knocked again. He said, «The door is open» without leaving the bed. Madhurima entered, pushing the door and said, «Happy Birthday Ranjan!» She was holding a flower bouquet and a shopping bag in her hand.

Ranjan jumped out of bed and landed on the floor and asked with great surprise, “You! When did you leave?”

“What are you talking about Ranjan! Are you alright?” Madhurima asked him.

Ranjan looked at the canvas, at the brush in his hand and then at Madhurima, “Didn’t you come here last night? When did you leave” he asked again.

Madhurima looked at Ranjan with surprised eyes, then she looked at the canvas and saw her almost finished picture painted by Ranjan. She understood that Ranjan was drawing at night and became obsessed, so he did not sleep well and stayed in bed for so long. Madhurima said, “Please take a quick shower and wear this Punjabi*5, let’s go to Elephant Road*6 and have breakfast in the Malancha*7 Restaurant. How long has it been since we’ve had paratha with roasted meat together at this restaurant! From there we will go under the shadow of Bakul*8 flower tree at Fine Arts Institute to smell the flowers together, and then will walk to Mr. Nanna’s*9 Restaurant to have chicken polao and then return to rest.”

Ranjan was listening to the words that were being laid out. He said, “So many plans! Don’t you have official duty today?”

“No Mr. I’ll be with you whole the day, because I took leave. It’s your birthday. Please come up with a shower, don’t waste any time.”

While Ranjan was taking shower Madhurima stood in front of the canvas and looked at the picture. She was touching her own picture over and over and wondered an unknown thrill. The level of her deep love for Ranjan multiplied then. She took off the sharee*10 from her body, took out the navel along with waist folds and tried to match it with the picture again and again, as though she was intoxicated in an exciting game. At the same time, she was amazed at how Ranjan portrayed her body exactly! She became desperate to compare her own well-formed breasts with picture, but she got ashamed; what if Ranjan suddenly came out! Yet her inner lust failed to restrain herself. Excited, she uncovered her breasts and tried to match those to the picture on the canvas. Suddenly she wondered and seemed a ray of light vibrated all over her body. She became nervous for a while. But remembering Ranjan, she regained her composure and became startled by the sound of Ranjan’s entry to the room.

The Punjabi given by Madhurima to Ranjan was quite adaptable. After taking a shower he looked very tidy. Madhurima’s wish was to hug Ranjan and place her head on his wide chest. But she took care of herself. Madhurima was wearing a light pink colored hand printed sharee and had a matching tip on her forehead. Ranjan became fascinated and looked at her for a few moments. But it seemed as if his melody of fascination was being cut, Madhurima understood that. After breakfast at Elephant Road, they reached the Institute of Fine Arts at Shahbagh by a rickshaw.

The place was quite secluded before noon. Students were busy with their sessions, that’s what Madhurima wanted. Sitting under the Bakul tree, she held one of Ranjan’s hands on her lap. The whole yard was full of the intensely intoxicating smell of Bakul flowers. Madhurima was trying to bring Ranjan’s mind away from the rape incident with many other topics. At the same time, she was thrilled to think of her childish behavior with the picture that Ranjan drew. She wanted to talk to Ranjan about his drawing but despite repeated attempts was unable to raise the issue, thinking of her own embarrassment. She also thought that if Ranjan started thinking again about the incident of rape then it would be very difficult to bring out him from this trauma as the issue is related to rape. So she did not go that way and suppressed the intense delightful thoughts inside.

Ranjan was always happy to be with Madhurima, but he was not as cheerful as normal. It seemed that his thoughts were interrupted again and again. Having had a long relationship with Ranjan, Madhurima could tell that he was not acting normal.

While noon coming to an end, they walked towards the Chankharpool*11. After having lunch at Mr. Nanna’s Restaurant they returned back to Ranjan’s room by rickshaw to take a rest. Ranjan was very anxious all the time as he was thinking about something else. Madhurima assumed Ranjan was feeling guilty about himself. He was totally unable to come out from that incident. Madhurima wanted to avoid the matter. But it was very necessary to bring Ranjan out of there, as he was suffering. He must have been thinking about his plans for the series of drawings, Madhurima did not want to embarrass Ranjan about his activities last night. Ruther she wanted to keep Ranjan distracted, giving him company whole day. But she was not sure how successful she had been. Then she raised the issue-

“How did you paint my picture so beautifully without making me model?”

“Was I able to do what I wanted? No, it has not yet happened. I wanted to explore such an expression that would strike the mind of rapists and mock them.” Said Ranjan.

Madhurima realized that Ranjan was thinking about that topic whole day long. Even though he was accompanying her, his mind was on the canvas. She hugged Ranjan and said, «I am with you, I will absorb all your anguish today. But will you find that expression on me?”

Madhurima brought her lips down to Ranjan’s ear, Ranjan heard her faint but clear voice, «Lets cross all the distance between you and me and move on to explore a new life.»

Then the filled river flooded over and over, the sea became rough and the high foam waves ran endlessly to touch the new horizon.

After three consecutive orgasms, Ranjan saw a glimmer of heavenly light in Madhurima’s face. He stared at her with an enchanted gaze, as if the goddess Aphrodite had just come down from heaven! She looked tired of sex drive, gratified, weary and at the same time Intense of sexual arousal, whose face is glistening in the brightness of the golden sun of the morning and its radiance has spread everywhere.

Madhurima looked at Ranjan’s eyes and asked, «What are you looking at so crazily?”

“I’ll tell you later, but first tell me, what are you feeling in this moment?” asked Ranjan.

“Just, wow Ranjan, there is no analogy to what you gave me today,” she answered, and added, “I became tied up to you for my whole life. Most of the women in our sub-continent don’t have experience with this taste even once in their lifetime, they just become raped unknowingly again and again. What are foreplay and orgasm- what do those feels like, that remains unknown to them.”

Ranjan said, “What you have given me is also amazing, did a rapist ever get what I have gotten?!”

«Certainly not! Only men those who are perverted mentality like an animal can think of raping a woman. Now tell me, what were you looking at on my face?», Madhurima asked.

“What I have been looking for since last night, I can see the expression on your face now, this is exactly what I wanted to expose on the canvas. I see the beauty of the heavenly Aurora Borealis among you and I wonder how the rapist will get such eyes like me!” Ranjan said.

Madhurima emotionally applauds Ranjan with a long kiss and said, “why are you being late, please finish the portrait now. This is why I became your model.”

Gently detaching himself from Madhurima’s nude body, Ranjan picked up paint with his brush. Then the evening passed, the gentle breeze blew through the open window and goddess of love Aphrodite kept peeking inside standing on the top of the Krishnachura tree again and again. The alluring face of Madhurima gradually revealed itself on Ranjan’s canvas and seeing it, both of them became astounded. Then, emotionally, they clasped each other tightly and the two human bodies reunited together. Madhurima gleefully realized that Ranjan was on the right track. She spent the whole night being a nude model, helping Ranjan to draw the elegance of her own body on the canvas. Ratified after the completion of the first picture, Ranjan started drawing a series of art like a fascinated artist. Finally, Ranjan found himself as a poet of art who started drawing a series of pictures like poetry portraying Madhurima’s glowing nude body by his brush.
